I grew up in an environment where I was surrounded by accountants. My maternal grandfather was a CPA. My father and uncle are both CPA's, and they helped start a very successful firm in Burlington, NC - Stout, Stuart, McGowen & King, LLP. So, it would be appropriate to say that accounting is in my blood.
I graduated with honors from NC State University in December 2000, obtaining a B.S. in Accounting. After graduation, I attended Duke Divinity School and briefly worked in the ministry. But, I eventually found my way back to accounting. Currently, I have over 10 years experience working with CPA firms doing tax preparation and bookkeeping for a wide range of industries.
You may find me quiet at first, but you will quickly find out that I am a true people person who loves taking care of my clients. I am willing to take the time my clients deserve so they understand what I am doing and why I am doing it. My goal is that my clients can work on their business during the day while I take care of the back office, and hopefully my clients can sleep well at night knowing their work is in good hands.
When off the clock, I enjoy going to concerts and comedy shows. I'm actually somewhat of a heavy metal aficionado, and the logo for the company is designed to show a little of my personality. My most recent love is throwing axes! I know it sounds crazy, but it's great stress relief, and if you've never tried it, you really should. All in all, I know my accounting, but I'm approachable and down-to-earth as well.
N Balance has been around in one form or another since December 2018. Originally, N Balance Bookkeeping, LLC, the company was located in Holly Springs, NC. I had a room in the front of my house that was perfect for an office, so that's where the company started. Unfortunately, N Balance Bookkeeping, LLC was short-lived. My wife and I separated, and I moved close to Wake Forest, NC. In order to keep afloat, I took a full-time job and dissolved N Balance Bookkeeping, LLC. However, I did keep the few clients I already had.
In August of 2020, I decided to give N Balance another try, this time as N Balance, LLC dba N Balance Bookkeeping & Tax Service. I have done taxes for years, and sometimes I actually enjoy doing tax more than bookkeeping, so I got my personal EFIN with the IRS so I could e-file taxes, and the company took on another stream of revenue. Originally, I had intended on making N Balance my career, but that takes time. So, in order make ends meet, in December 2020, I accepted a "temp" position working for a CPA in Durham, NC for tax season.
After tax season, in May 2021, I was offered a full-time job with the CPA in Durham, and I decided to take it. What I learned during tax season was the importance of the review process before submitting a tax return. Having done taxes for years for other CPA firms, I have always had a reviewer, and I found that I felt more comfortable having that review process in place, which I couldn't do working solo. Also, I learned that I actually do really enjoy doing tax returns, so I don't want to give that up either. In order to keep doing taxes, but have a review process, the only solution was to work for someone (I didn't say work "with' someone just due to the fact that I prefer my reviewers be a more senior-level accountant than myself). So, working in Durham has been a great opportunity, and I am glad I accepted.
Currently, N Balance is taking another shape. I have committed to working full-time in Durham, but I don't want to get rid of N Balance. Instead, N Balance is now an "after hours" job. I am scaling things back to strictly bookkeeping on a virtual level - no on-site bookkeeping. Everything is done via the web. Files can be transferred through Secure File. N Balance no longer offers tax services at this time. Things may change in the future, but this is N Balance, LLC for now.
